Project Management changed in last 2 decades.

Project Management changed in last 2 decades.

I am worked in IT industry for last 2 decades and completed my PMP in 2012. Since then I am practicing project and program management. I am a regular member of PMI and able to see the difference of each version of PMBOK.

I wanted bring my experience and changes that I have able to observed in project management. In the current scenarios project are not being managed as it was done during 2005 time. There were very less tools available and people has to managed in excel sheet. Mostly traditional way (Waterfall techniques). It was a time when contract was designed based on WBS (Work breakdown) or FP estimation and scope baseline was highly important. Based on the scope schedule and Cost was finalized.

But with the evaluation of technologies and complex project in nature where scope was difficult to finalized and hence agile mythology comes into picture. In agile team worked in the iteration manner and team take the task for each iteration. There is only 3 team roles available:

Product Owner – Product owner is responsibility of Product Backlog and setting priority for the iteration.

Scrum Master – Scrum Master is making sure the agile practice is being followed by the team and facilitating to remove the impediments.

Product Team – Fully motivated and highly enabled professionals who are taking the task from Product Backlog and plan the Iteration backlog.

With Agile, complex project is being successfully delivered and chances of project failure has been reduced, this is because team is getting constant feedback from the customer after every iteration or every milestone achieved. Apart from the Traditional or Agile project management, people management also changed where earlier it more about direct and instruct the team. Now more emphasize towards team motivation and focus to enable the self-driving team.
